One of the bombings targeted a congregation of the UCA’s partner church GKI Diponegoro.
A Church elder and several congregation members were injured. Two other suicide attacks left more than a dozen people killed and more than 40 injured. Shockingly all the attacks seem to have been carried out by members of the same family.
In letters to the GKI Moderator and the President of the Communion of Churches in Indonesia Mr McMillan and UnitingWorld National Director Dr Sureka Goringe conveyed their deep sorrow.
“We pray for strength and courage for your leaders, for comfort and healing for your members, and that together, GKI remains a beacon of hope and peace in Indonesia,” said Mr McMillan.
“We want you to know the Uniting Church in Australia stands in solidarity with you and is praying for all Christian churches in Indonesia at this time.”
UnitingWorld National Director Dr Sureka Goringe said she “looked forward to a day when we can live in harmony together regardless of religion, race or gender.”
The UCA message included a prayer written by Assembly Theologian-in-Residence Rev. Dr Ji Zhang and translated by Assembly National Consultant Rev. Dr Apwee Ting, who is a former President of the UCA Indonesian National Conference.
