The World Council of Churches (WCC) is inviting member churches to join in celebrating the Council’s 70th anniversary this year.

In a letter to WCC member churches and ecumenical partners, WCC General Secretary Rev. Dr Olav Fyske Tveit has called for churches to hold celebrations in their own context on or around 23 August, the date of the opening of the 1st WCC assembly in Amsterdam.

A number of other events are being scheduled.

The Archbishop of Canterbury the Most Rev’d Justin Welby will be the keynote speaker at the first 70th Anniversary public event, speaking at the Ecumenical Centre in Geneva on the topic: ‘Ecumenical Spring: from Negotiated Frontiers to Open Borders.’

Rev. Dr Tveit is also inviting member churches to contribute stories, prayers and songs on the occasion of the 70th anniversary.

For resources and more information on events, the Council has set up webpage dedicated to the 70th anniversary:

If you would like to contribute to the anniversary or hold your own WCC celebration, please contact Rebecca Beisler of the Assembly Resources Unit.
