Can a Christian church benefit from learning about the spiritual paths of other religious communities?
“The answer is not just yes, but we must in order to broaden our own thinking and experience, and to stop ourselves from falling into habitual ways and practices that constrict rather than expand us” said Michael Barnes, Minister at Crows Nest Uniting Church.
Belief in “unity in diversity” is what drives Crows Nest Uniting Church to hold inter-faith services as an integral part of its activities.
“We do it because we live in a diverse and fractured community, and want to build bridges of interest, understanding and tolerance.
“We do it to be hospitable, so that in a small way we might convey a sense of welcome and interest in all faiths”, said the Minister.
Following the success of the multi-faith services last year with the Hindu community, the Jewish community (including a visit to a Sabbath service) and hearing about Aboriginal spirituality, the Church will embark on four different multi-faith services this year.
The planned services this year are with four very diverse religious expressions in our communities:
- Sunday 16 October Introduction to interfaith (Rev Michael Barnes)
- Sunday 23 October Sri Prahlad, Hare Krishna priest
- Sunday 30 October Rabbi Paul Jacobsen & friends from Emanuel Synagogue, Woollahra
- Sunday 6 November Fr Tony Smith from St Mary’s Catholic Church, North Sydney
- Sunday 13 November Prof Dennis Foley on Aboriginal spirituality.
“Amongst the members of the Crows Nest Uniting Church community, I have sensed genuine interest, appreciation and a desire to explore other spiritual pathways.
“As for our inter-faith guests, I believe they have appreciated our interest and hospitality and this has been important to them. Last year, I was invited to address a Buddhist community to reciprocate their visit.
“At our inter-faith services, the guests will speak to us about their religious tradition and practice. I will offer reflections from a Christian perspective.
“The service on 30 October with the Jewish community will be followed by a picnic at Berry Island.
“All are welcome to attend the services and the picnic” said the Minister, Michael Barnes.
Uniting Church Crows Nest is an inclusive church community, welcoming people of all faiths and open to all religious traditions.
