Hindu Council of Australia Deepavali Fair 2010

4th – 8th November, 2010 saw the people of Parramatta, Sydney engrossed in all things Indian. The city hosted its first annual ‘Parramasala’ weekend, an event which showcased South Asian arts. From plays, traditional dance and movie screenings to music, roving street entertainment and market stalls, all tastes were catered to.

On the same weekend, Hindus globally celebrated the festival of Diwali. Diwali (or Deepavali, meaning 'row of lamps') is a five day festival, which holds meaning for Hindus, Sikhs and Jains. Its name is derived from the practice of decorating homes using oil lamps to symbolize the triumph of good over evil and the removal of darkness. Diwali is a joyous occasion, and this was certainly apparent at the Parramatta Stadium during the Hindu Council of Australia’s Deepavali Fair on 7th November, 2010.

The Fair was officially opened by NSW Premier Kristina Keneally who praised the work of the Fair in promoting harmony between cultures. People of all ages and backgrounds were seen enjoying the Fair, with some 20,000 through the gates. All aspects of Indian culture were on show – henna tattoo stalls, music, dance, and amazingly tasty food, and all offered with famous Indian hospitality.
