For more than 25 years the Uniting Church has been discussing the theme of ‘Sexuality and Leadership’. In 2006, the Assembly resolved: To request the Assembly Working Group on Doctrine to engage in further work that assists the Church in our ongoing consideration of the theological diversity of the Church on this issue and to authorise the Assembly Standing Committee to determine the terms of reference for such work. (resolution 06.41)
One response to that request led to a Consultation on 4-5 February 2008, which addressed the question of ‘Sexuality and Leadership’, seeking to discover both agreed and unresolved issues in the church. |

The National Working Group on Doctrine has prepared the first three discussion starters of what are being called DocBytes. They aim to encourage theological thinking on specific topics across the Uniting Church. These two-page papers are especially aimed at groups though they can also be used for personal reflection. They provide some input, questions, and also point to further reading options. The first three are on: Apologetics, Doctrine and Marriage. Future Doc Bytes are being prepared on Evangelism, the Christian Life, Baptism and Peacemaking. They are available on the Assembly and Doctrine websites and can be downloaded free of charge. Glossy copies can also be purchased from the Assembly, cost: $10 for 10 Bytes.

A church of passionate disciples... rethinking church membership |
|
The Doctrine Working Group prepared a paper in March 2007, introducing a discussion about the meaning and function of membership in our church. It asks that we consider the role of baptism, confirmation, covenant, and membership while remaining committed to tradition, encouraging the exploration of possibilities for a way forward and inviting responses.
It has been circulated across the church to help congregations, faith communities, presbyteries and synods to reconsider how we define membership. Each council is encouraged to engage with the paper and to respond to the suggestions made within it. These responses will be collated and the Assembly Standing Committee will prepare proposals for the 12th Assembly in 2009. A church of passionate disiples... rethinking church membership

A discussion paper was developed to help the Uniting Church in Australia prepare for the 10th Assembly in July 2003, containing seven proposals to help congregations in the ministry of evangelism and forming disciples of Jesus. Becoming disciples
The process itself has since been developed by the Theology and Discipleship agency. The Becoming Disciples process is a helpful way of walking with people as they explore the claims of Jesus Christ and begin the Christian life. We offer a general framework and lots of resources. It includes three talks by Daniel Benedict, given to the National Consultation on the Becoming Disciples process in Adelaide, August 2004. The Becoming Disciples overview and resource kit can be downloaded from the National Assembly website. |
